Nearly two dozen graduating high school seniors got a boost on their journey toward higher education recently thanks to the Newberg Rotary Club.

The club awarded more than $49,000 in scholarships this year to students in the greater Newberg area.

The students who applied were from area public and private high schools — those attending private high schools were required to be from within the Newberg-Dundee or St. Paul school districts, according to Newberg Rotary scholarship chairwoman Laura Horani, who is also director of Portland Community College’s Newberg Center. The students learned of the opportunity for scholarships via their respective school’s college and career counselors.

“Students were considered on the content and quality of their application, two essays, their academic transcript and two letters of recommendation,” a release from Rotary said. “The essays ask students to describe their service to others (because the Rotary motto is "Service Above Self"), as well as their future academic and career plans. Basically, Rotary gives out scholarships to students who have the potential to change their community.”

Three Newberg High School students and one student at St. Paul High School were the recipients of the Rotary Club’s largest scholarships, amounting to $3,000 each. They are as follows:

Corrie Radcliffe (NHS), who received the Ray Simonson Scholarship.Hudson Veatch (NHS), who received the Ken Austin II Scholarship.Paige Stilp (NHS), who received the Joan Austin Scholarship.Stella Koch (SPHS), who received the Crystal Dawn Smith Rilee Scholarship.

Two students earned $2,000 Community College/Vocational/Trade School scholarships: Leslie Andrade (NHS) and Annalia Radilla (Catalyst High School).

The Rotary & ABC-Dayton Education Foundation Scholarship, worth $1,000, went to Brooklyn Hodges of Dayton High School.

Seniors receiving $2,000 College/University Scholarships include Ashley Cochran (NHS), Caden Johns (NHS), Cameron Kelly (NHS), Imogen Long (NHS), Isabella Herboldt (NHS), Jacob Wojcik (NHS), Jaysha Torres-Garibay (Catalyst), Lucia Tomaselli (NHS), Madison Lenz (NHS), Malachi Muthiah (NHS), Maria Cerriteno Alcantar (NHS), Patricia Seto (NHS), Rowan Meyers (NHS), Sierra Stoltenberg (St Paul), Tenley Pothoff (NHS) and Vada Coats Ogrenics (NHS).
