Newberg’s raucous annual summer party is nigh.

The Old Fashioned Festival will kick off July 25 for a four-day run at venues centered on the municipal core, from the Chehalem Cultural Center on the north to Renne Park on the south.

The theme of this year’s festival is “Lights, Camera, Festival!” and the number of events and attractions this year are nearly too numerous to count, but we’ll give it a try.

The unofficial start to the festival will occur from 2 to 4 p.m. July 25 in the forecourt of the cultural center when the Community Chalk Art Party invites aspiring artists to display their talents. Chalk will be provided, along with snacks and music. Participants will be eligible to win a $25 education gift card (one for adults, one for youth) that will be redeemable for classes and workshops at CCC.

As is custom, the four-day run will kick off in earnest at 6 p.m. July 25 with the Children’s Parade, which will wind its way through a nearly half-mile loop that starts at the school district headquarters on Sixth Street. Kids are invited to ply the route after adorning themselves and their mode of transport with flair.

Coronation of this year’s festival queen, Kyndall McCollum, is set for 7 p.m. on the main stage at Memorial Park. Princess Elise Steffen will join McCollum in officially proclaiming the festival open for four days.

Not to be outdone by their human counterparts, canines of all shapes and varieties will gather with their masters at 7:30 p.m. on the Cultural Stage at Renne Field for the popular dog costume contest. Registration opens at 6:30 p.m. and categories include most creative, most hilarious, best human and dog lookalike and best in show. There is a limit of 25 contestants, so get there early.

The cultural stage has a variety of acts from 4 to 10 p.m. July 26 and July 27. Following a resource fair from 3 to 6 p.m. July 26, Loteria Comunitaria will perform from 4 to 4:30, Ballet Folklorico from 4:30 to 5 p.m. and the Summer School Talent Show is set for 5 to 6 p.m. Latin Night Salsa Class with DJ Rios is set for 6 to 8 p.m., with Groupo Mparable finishing out the night’s entertainment from 8 to 10 p.m.

Saturday’s events on the cultural stage will kick off at 2 p.m. with Royal Story Time, the Newberg High School dance team will perform from 3 to 3:30 p.m. and Ballet Folklorico will take the stage from 4 to 4:30 p.m. Orgullo Mixteco Dance Troupe will entertain from 4:30 to 5 p.m., Henrik Gothe will perform magic, juggling and comedy from 5 to 6 p.m., Mariachi Mexico En La Piel is on tap from 6 to 7 p.m. and Fantasmas Del Ritmo will complete the evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Highlights on the main stage at Memorial Park include The Bartolotti Bros. at 7:30 p.m. July 25; Thunder Road at 5:30 p.m. and the Ty Curtis Band at 8 p.m. July 26; Rob Rainwater at 1:30 p.m., Double T Band at 4 p.m. and The Pranksters at 7:30 p.m. July 27.

Those festival attendees wishing to test their nerve and their stomachs can travel to the east end of Renne Field to attend the popular carnival from 5 to 10 p.m. Thursday; 4 to 10 p.m. Friday; and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday. Wristbands are $30 pre-ordered, $35 when the carnival opens.

The favorite Rotary Pancake Breakfast is set for 6 a.m. to noon Saturday and Sunday at Memorial Park.

The grand parade is set for 10 a.m. to noon July 27 on a route that begins at Edwards Elementary and travels counterclockwise to end up at the school district office. One of the primary draws of the festival, thousands of parade-watchers typically line the route to witness the floats, bands, fire apparatus and other entries. Two longtime supporters of the festival and legends among the Newberg business community, Linda and Tom Vondrachek, will serve as grand marshals of the parade.

For more information about the parade, email parade chairwoman Missy Love at noffparade@gmail.com or call her at 503-351-6966. To register, visit tinyurl.com/44uef97f .

As is tradition, the festival will wrap up from 1-1:45 p.m. and 2-2:45 p.m. July 28 with a performance by the Newberg Community Band and the Hymn Sing from 3 to 4 p.m. on the main stage.
