NEWBERRY — More changes are coming to the Newberry College Athletics program from the Track and Field side of things. Mashario Morton, head coach of the Wolves’ men’s and women’s teams, announced via Instagram that she would be leaving the program after four successful years.

Morton arrived at Newberry College in 2019 and turned the program completely over her tenure. Since arriving, Morton have produced 10 South Atlantic Conference champions, an All American, a top-four team finish, 20 national qualifiers, 20 plus graduates and broke every throwing event record in school history.

Before arriving to Newberry, she was the head coach at Dixie High School for the varsity girls’ track team. She produced 11 state champions, back-to-back region championships and was awarded the school’s first ever Carlisle Cup for having the best athletic program in 1A.

As an athlete, Morton won six South Carolina state championships in the Discus and and Shotput. Then, moved to become a four-year thrower at Division I Winthrop University. She is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. and a loving mother to her son Tristan that she shares with her partner Jaelyn.

“Today it is with a heavy heart that I announce that I will no longer be serving as the Newberry Track and Field Head Coach. In the last 4 years, we changed the narrative and built a program. I pray athletes will see that I only had their best interest in heart over the years. Being tough does not mean I don’t care. It means I see so much greater in you that I was trying to get out. Although our journey together is ending prematurely, I thank each of you for riding it out through the highs and the lows. We made the most out of the little that was given, which made every victory so much sweeter. Thank you for trusting in me and growing with me,” Morton wrote on Instagram.

She didn’t announce where her next stop would be, but she will leave it better than she found with her good track record of success. Thank you coach for your wonderful years of service and good luck at your next stop!
