Newberry High edge rusher Mykah Newton announced his commitment to NC State on Thursday afternoon before a spirited gathering of family and friends at Newberry's High School Gym.

A three-star recruit per 247Sports composite, Newton chose N.C. State over offers from UCF and Michigan State.

Newton said a factor in his decision was the relationship he developed with N.C. State coach Charley Wiles. whose brother, Bill Wiles, was a former Gainesville-area high school football coach at Branford, Santa Fe and Trenton.

"N.C. State has a very loving way toward you, recruitment wise," Newton said. "Ever since Coach Wiles came, from the first time he recruited me, it was amazing. I love the energy; I love how I fit in the scheme. I love the whole area, the fans, the players."

At 6-foot-2 and 255 pounds, Newton has posted 27 career sacks and 45 career tackles for loss in three seasons at Newberry.

Newberry LB/TE Logan McCloud commits to Wofford

Newberry High football tight end/linebacker Logan McCloud committed to Wofford on Thursday, over offers from Army and Charleston Southern.

"It was crazy because just last week I didn't know where I was going," McCloud said. "Me and my dad just sat down, and we just talked to the coaches and got in contact with them, and we went and visited Wofford on Tuesday and it felt like home. The whole coaching staff you can tell is genuine and it's a brotherhood over there."

The 6-foot-1, 215-pound McCloud posted 73 catches last season, including 21 tackles for loss. On offense at tight end, he had 3 catches for 54 yards and 1 TD.

McCloud, Newton and four-star defensive tackle recruit Jarquez Carter. who committed to Ohio State, will anchor a Newberry defense that has state title aspirations.

"That's all that's on our minds really right now," McCloud said.
