Two Newcastle seniors and a sophomore represented their school at the state track and field meet last weekend.

Seniors Isaac King and Ty Strawbridge and sophomore Aubree Clayton each qualified for the state meet in their events after a successful season and run through the postseason schedule. King competed in pole vault, Strawbridge in discus and Clayton in high jump.

The state meet was held at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin last Saturday, May 4. While the three Newcastle athletes didn’t earn medals, they performed well among the best athletes in the state in Class 1A.

Strawbridge came the closest to the podium in his event as he finished sixth place overall among boys discus throwers. The senior recorded a long distance of 141-06, just about five feet short of the third-place finisher.

King stood alone in seventh place in pole vault with a jump a foot and a half short of the podium. He recorded a best jump of 12-06 with the third-place vaulter recording 14-00. The champion cleared the bar at 14-09.

The lone female representative for Newcastle, Clayton ended a few inches short of the rest of the field in the high jump. The sophomore recorded a jump of 4-10 to come in eighth place. However, the winning jumper cleared 5-02, with second through sixth places recording jumps of 5-00.

Making it to the state competition in any sport is already a huge accomplishment, and these Newcastle athletes competed with the best of them to conclude their track and field season.
