Developer loses another round in court but says new ordinance allows Rosewood project
Hillsboro Beach – The Fourth District Court of Appeal has ruled against Related Group’s petition that it review a decision by the 17th Circuit Court that found insufficient evidence of hardship when the town granted a height variance in January of 2022. The order came down Monday from...
Catch of the Week: Santa is bringing sailfish and snapper
Santa may be bringing a little something special this year when it comes to fishing. Sailfish are on the move and being caught right out front of Hillsboro Inlet. We have had tons of wind lately and that is generally a good sign for sails. We saw people fishing with kites all week and using live bait to target these pelagics. The best of the bite was around 160 feet of water and live goggle eyes fished from the kite was the best technique.
From learning life skills to preparing young athletes for college, The LeSane Project aims to be a positive force
Pompano Beach – The LeSane Project has helped produce 17 high school graduates and 12 businesses since its inception. The non-profit is a mentoring organization geared towards entrepreneurship, personal development, and social-emotional health. Founder Jazzman LeSane started the organization because she had the privilege of growing up with parents who gave back. “My mom was a teacher and dad was a youth football coach, I was the youngest of five siblings who were able to participate in the things they were doing.”
Viewpoints – Week of Dec. 17
“I found it odd not one mention in today’s New Pelican of Pearl Harbor”. I realize The New Pelican is a local newspaper. And it is a very good local newspaper at that. I gave up on the Herald and Sun-Sentinel awhile back. Just too much garbage, blarney and no news, but lots of propaganda. Plus, they are always pushing one to go online for whatever because it did not make it on time for press. I will check them out later at Publix.
Free rideshare service approved by CRA; garbage cart replacement begins next month
Deerfield Beach – “There’s no such thing as a free lunch” may apply when making financial decisions, but for businesses in this city’s CRA District there will be free rides for their customers. Last week the Community Development Board approved a $300,000, one-year pilot project...
Inlet dock and dredging permits will be a lengthy process
The Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) decision regarding the 100-foot dock a homeowner wants to build in the Hillsboro Inlet likely won’t come soon. According to Brian Miller, a spokesman for the agency, a joint permit for the dock and the Inlet District’s dredging permit are now under review. But the DEP has issued two requests for more info and that, Miller says, can take 180 days or longer. The requests were made in June and September.
Inclement weather doesn’t stop annual Wreaths tribute to veterans
Pompano Beach – Despite heavy wind and rain that knocked out traffic lights at Atlantic Boulevard and Federal Highway and beyond, about 400 people came out Dec. 16 to lay balsam wreaths on veterans’ graves at Pompano Cemetery. The wreath ceremony, hosted by the Lighthouse Point Chapter of...
Packer Rattlers have funding issues; Pier repair moving forward
Deerfield Beach – The Packer-Rattlers, the city’s youth football program, is in a financial bind, its president, Tyrone Philpart, told city commissioners last week. The rising cost of security and transportation put the league in a $11,000 shortfall at the end of the 2023 season. Also impacting the...
Move over, George Jetson: Pompano aerospace company is preparing to manufacture flying cars
Pompano Beach – In a nondescript warehouse here, the flying car, long just the stuff of science fiction, may have finally been born. One of several companies across the world building flying cars, Doroni Aerospace invited Mayor Rex Hardin and the media to tour its facility on Dec. 7 and view its prototype, the H1 eVTOL, which, the company said, HAS received Special Airworthiness Certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
New City Players delivers another festive holiday theater gift
Broward-based theater company New City Players had great success last year by giving its audience the gift of a holiday show in a fun, retro format, by producing the classic “It’s a Wonderful Life” as a radio play. Now they’re back with that same retro spin on another seasonal classic, with “A Christmas Carol: A Live Radio Play.”
Historic 1953 marker: Not a time capsule, but what is it?
Deerfield Beach – Reminiscent of Geraldo Rivera’s 1986 TV stunt – the much hyped opening of Al Capone’s vault – the “1953 time capsule” recovered from the grounds of Deerfield Beach Elementary School, did not hold a message from the past. At the...
School board agrees to discussions on restoring old elementary school auditorium
Deerfield Beach – A presentation to the school board Tuesday by City Manager Daivd Santucci and citizens concerned about the future of the original Deerfield Beach Auditorium did not fall on inattentive ears. The board agreed that School Superintendent Dr. Peter Licata could meet with the community to explore...

The purpose of the bridge Improvement was to create a stronger pedestrian connection between the North Palm Aire Drive Bridge, West Palm Aire Drive Bridge, and Herb Skolnick Center.
Golden Bell offers seniors a taste of the good life
Wilton Manors – Independence Hall and Williamsburg Landing both offer residents more – actually way more – than most assisted living facilities. Golden Bell Senior Living took over operations Jan. 1, 2023 of these mainstays serving the senior population of Wilton Manors and the surrounding South Florida area. There are more than 2 million reasons to get reacquainted with these communities.
HerStory: The history of the Poinsettia goes back to ancient times
Rich in history and lore, the vibrant Poinsettia is native to Guatemala and Mexico. They were cultivated by the Mayans and Aztecs for their red bracts (leaves) which were used for fabric dye and the sap for medicinal uses such as to treat wounds and break fevers. The Aztecs called...
Catch of the Week: Giant swordfish are being caught right off Lighthouse Point
Pictured here is the 700 pound swordfish caught a few days back by John Bassett and Jake Richards off Lighthouse Point. As I wrote last week, this is the time when we start to see the giant swords here as the migrational pattern pushes fish right off our Hillsboro Inlet. This fish was caught in 1,680 feet of water on an eel. There were several fish landed over the 300 pound mark this week and the fishing should continue to be great all the way through the next several months.
