Deep frying your turkey this Thanksgiving? Here are some tips to stay safe
It’s no secret that holiday cooking causes the most house fires every year and many of these involve a Thanksgiving turkey. According to ServiceMaster Restore, a company that offers restoration and repair services for homes and commercial properties, Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires with more than three times the daily average for such incidents.
Catch of the Week: Sailfish and mahi-mahi are biting near shore
You may not have to go far this weekend to put up a nice catch. Lots of boats this week caught sailfish and plenty of them. This is a good sign as it is early in the sailfish season. The mahi-mahi were mixed in with the sails and several nice fish were caught over 25 pounds like the one pictured here. All of the fishing this week was very close to shore right on the third reef from 150 to 250 feet of water. Our reef system is structured north and south and runs for many miles.
To meet new EPA standards and improve utilities systems, rates will rise
Pompano Beach – The commission has unanimously approved four ordinances to modify fees for various types of utility service: water, sewer, stormwater, and connection charges and rates for reuse water. The fees will be voted on again at a future commission meeting. The next meeting is on Nov. 14....
“Unintended consequences” keeping family out of their dream home
Deerfield Beach – Brandon Hollenberg thought he had found a little piece of paradise for his family. It was a secluded lot on the Hillsboro River on a dead end road. Delayed by COVID-19 and a lengthy permitting process, a year ago he proceeded to have a 5,000 square foot, two-story home built. “I thought it would be my dream home,” he told city commissioners last month.
Correspondence indicates restaurant operator’s claim of five-year extension is false
Deerfield Beach – Pier Cafe operator Toula Amanna has refused to vacate the restaurant on grounds she had renewed her lease for another five years, until 2028. It is the premise of the complaint she has filed against the city. While she remains open for business, city officials say she never had an extension of her 10-year lease and should have closed her doors Oct. 27.

Pompano Beach – Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) Undersheriff Nichole Anderson recognized the 13 BSO deputies and the Pompano Beach Fire Rescue and Lighthouse Point deputies who sprang into action the morning of Aug. 28 when a BSO helicopter crashed into an apartment building here, near the corner of Dixie Highway and Northeast 10 Street.

Pompano Beach, Fort Lauderdale lead the nation in pedestrian deaths in 2021
In a recently-released nationwide study of the number of pedestrian fatalities in cities with populations of 100,000 residents or more, Pompano Beach had the dubious distinction of leading the nation in the number of fatalities: 8.9 pedestrians killed in vehicle accidents per 100,000 residents in 2021, the year of the study, which was done by 1Point21 Interactive, a data analysis firm based in San Diego.
