9/11 remembered
The September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon happened more than 20 years ago, but Alfonso “Al” Vallejo’s memory of that day hasn’t faded. A retired New York City police officer and Air Force veteran, Vallejo was one of about 150 people at Pompano Beach’s 9/11 ceremony, held Monday at Founders Park. Vallejo, who served with the New York Police Department’s Harbor Unit Scuba Team, told The New Pelican the worst thing he experienced that day was the sound of bodies hitting vehicles, concrete, and roofs with a “bam” from 80, 90, 110 stories above.

Coastal Waste gets garbage contract; WDID is extended
Wilton Manors – City commissioners approved an agreement with Coastal Waste & Recycling of Florida for its solid waste and recycling services. The agreement, approved at the Aug. 22 commission meeting, is for a three-year period beginning Oct. 1. The city has the option to extend the contract for two additional two-year periods. The contractor may seek a price adjustment by providing documented justification to the satisfaction of the city which must be requested 90 days before any contract extension and is capped at a 2.5 percent increase.

Girl Scout troop offers a library of fun to beachgoers
Pompano Beach – Taking inspiration from social media, Girl Scout Troop 10276 has created the Toy Library for the benefit of beachgoers here. According to Troop Leader Ashley Ballard, one of the girl’s parents came up with the idea of this toy-filled library in April after seeing it on social media. Soon afterwards, other scouts and their parents discovered that toy libraries already exist in the east and west coasts of the U.S. and in the U.K. According to the USA Toy Library Association, the first toy library opened in Los Angeles in 1935.

Addition of guard rail on Hillsboro Bridge won’t happen anytime soon
Deerfield Beach – The ongoing concerns about the danger to pedestrians and cyclists on the Hillsboro Boulevard Bridge won’t be resolved anytime soon. According to information released by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), no barriers will be installed until the bridge is widened. The design for that project is not anticipated to begin until 2026. No construction date has been decided.
Golfers facing higher fees at city course; I-95 overpass murals approved
Pompano Beach – City Staff has recommended a rate increase at Pompano Beach Municipal Golf Course for the new fiscal year in 2024. Asked for a copy of the new fees, Assistant City Manager Earl Bosworth said, “The commission has not yet approved the new fees.” Golf course management also said the commission has yet to approve proposed fees, and declined to say when they will be approved, or to provide a copy of the proposed fees.
