Town attorney files to protect Hillsboro’s position in Related’s height; public disagrees
Hillsboro Beach – The Related Group can proceed with its 10-story luxury condo on the Hillsboro Mile, Town Attorney DJ Doody said this week. Doody cited amendments to the RM-16 zoning ordinance made late last year that will allow the developer to proceed, notwithstanding the court’s decision that favors residents who oppose the project.

“Florida has now become the most extreme death penalty state”. For several years, Florida, like 26 other states, required a unanimous vote before imposing the death penalty after a conviction for a capital felony. Recently, Governor Ron DeSantis, who is expected to announce his candidacy for president, signed into law a bill which allows juries to recommend a death sentence with an 8-4 vote. Florida has now become the most extreme death penalty state. Previously, Alabama was the only state which allowed a divided jury to send criminals to death row if 10 of 12 jurors recommended it. As expected, Florida’s change has generated renewed debate about its use of capital punishment.

Deerfield Beach – Halloween came early this year to the Braithwaite Center for Active Aging thanks to the Women’s Club at the Horizon Club. When club members gathered for their April 6 meeting, they handmade 24 “Candy Krafts of Sweets” and donated their colorful, candy-filled creations to the senior center, said club member Linda Fischler, who credits the artistic genius to fellow member Fran Rethorn.
Luxury 10-story condo development in question after judges quash height variance
Hillsboro Beach – A panel of circuit court judges has overturned a height variance given to the Related Group, developers planning to build a 10-story, 92-unit condo building at 1185 Hillsboro Mile. The town’s zoning code imposes a three-story height limit on buildings in that section of the Mile.
Facade program boundaries change; Vault restaurant tapping into CRA funding
Pompano Beach – The Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) Board has made changes to its Facade and Business Site Improvement Program in the Northwest CRA District. The CRA eliminated its old Phase 1 target area for facade improvements, downtown Pompano and Dixie Highway between Atlantic Boulevard and Northwest 10 Street. The three target areas are now: 1. Martin Luther King Boulevard between Powerline Road and Dixie Highway, 2. Old Pompano Commercial District, and 3. Dixie Highway between Atlantic Boulevard and Copans Road.
