Photographer captures the Festival of Arts poster prize
Deerfield Beach – Pompano Beach photographer Barbara Allen’s artistic touch has won her the Festival of the Arts poster contest, and $1,000 prize money. Her interest in photography began in the darkroom during her senior year of high school in Holmdel, New Jersey. Little did she know that her graduation gift, a Pentax K-1000, would become her travel companion for many future years. She holds an associate’s degree in Graphic Communications Design, followed by a bachelor of science in marketing from the University of Florida. In the 1980s she began her career as a flight attendant, a job that affords her the time and flexibility to pursue her passion for photography.

Sixth time’s a charm: Steven Arnst elected to Oakland Park Commission
Oakland Park – After six attempts to get back onto the city commission, Steven Arnst claimed a long-sought victory. Arnst, who served from 1993 to 2001 and 2003 to 2011, has run in every election since 2013. In both 2001 and 2011, Arnst left the commission because he was term-limited. In Oakland Park, commissioners can serve a maximum of two terms (eight years) before they have to take a two-year break.

Pompano Beach – The 2nd Annual Road Show and Vintage Yard Sale, hosted by the Pompano Beach Historical Society, will be held Nov. 19, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 217 NE 4 Ave. There will be five antique appraisers on site, covering many different areas of expertise. Among the appraisers will be Robert Woodhouse, of BBC’s Antique Road Show. Appraisals are $10 per item and each person is limited to a maximum of five items. At the same time, the yard sale will feature various items, from bric-a-brac to sporting goods to jewelry to fine art.
