“Our city is proactively planning for this growth”. During construction, Atlantic Boulevard and Dixie Highway is a mess and maddening a lot of the time. But once done, the lanes will flow at a much better rate than what we’re currently experiencing. Similar statements were made when they narrowed Atlantic, east of South Cypress Road, all the way to the beach. People said it would take an hour to get to the beach and clearly that never materialized.

Eye on the Arts: Art event will give those with autism a chance to shine brightly
Pompano Beach – Creating works of art helps give those with autism a voice to be seen and heard, says David Miller, owner of Major Visibility Promotions. Miller has partnered with the Kappa Foundation of Pompano Beach to present Spectrum Expressions: A Creative Retreat for Autistic Minds – April 11 to 13 at the Sample-McDougald House, 450 NE 10 St. Miller, who studied art in college, conducts art workshops for autistic adults and other special needs individuals, and also serves on the Pompano Beach Public Arts Committee. Aquatic adventure and art combine to create an unique experience for teens
Deerfield Beach – First-time snorkeler Dawud Kahn had to cope with two things on his Sea Lab field trip: to remember to breathe while underwater and the water’s temperature which he described as “freezing.”. “It’s unnatural to breathe underwater,” he said after the experience. “I had to...
It’s the end of an era for Commissioner Sandy Johnson
Lighthouse Point – Commission President Sandy Johnson held the gavel for the last time Tuesday night, ending 19 years of elected office. She had retained her seat by running unopposed in seven elections, an advantage she attributes to being “always visible, always returning phone calls, and answering every email.”
Catch of the Week: Mahi-Mahi on the reef and swords offshore
Pictured above are two trips aboard the Lisa B this week. We had an awesome group of guys from the University of Notre Dame that put up a solid catch of mahi-mahi. The Patterson charter fishes aboard our boat every spring break and seem to get lucky every time. After the trip they bring their fish to Fish Shack in Lighthouse Point for the restaurant’s catch and cook program. If you get a chance, stop by this restaurant for excellent seafood.

I would like to see the signs indicating no digging on the sand dunes and no digging deeper than two feet on the beach. We all know people disregard signs, especially when it is a long list of “NOs.”. I have witnessed parents ignoring kids as they dig into...
It’s a caring place for the most disabled and fragile
Pompano Beach – The young residents at Broward Children’s Center’s Comprehensive Care Center share something in common: each of them has a complex medical condition requiring 24-7 skilled nursing care. Some of the patients at this 36-bed facility are attached to ventilators and or gastric feeding tubes....
At Meridian at Waterways, senior care is about community
Fort Lauderdale – Nestled into a corner of the Intracoastal Waterway, Meridian at Waterways offers independent care, assisted living, and memory care options. The carefully designed complex is studded with elegant coastal decor, floor-to-ceiling windows with sweeping water views, and museum quality artwork. Frozen in flight in the grand entryway is a sculpture of two vibrant glass butterflies that greet visitors, perhaps serving as a reminder of an awaiting adventure.
Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day all weekend long with green beer, corned beef, a mock wake, bagpipes, parade and more
The corned beef will be flowing as generously as the green beer on St. Patrick’s Day weekend as pubs and restaurants tap into a love of all things Irish. There will also be plenty of entertainment, music, and activities, served up by establishments, the City of Fort Lauderdale during its annual parade and festival, the Florida Renaissance Festival’s Celtic weekend theme, and Finnegan’s Wake, a mock “Old Fashioned Irish Wake” at The Galway Shawl.
Same old story, commissioner says, as town considers sand losses
Hillsboro Beach – This winter’s severe weather events took 27,000 cubic yards of the sand placed last spring on the town’s north beach, leaving one commissioner calling for change. “We can’t continue to do the same thing over and over and expect a different outcome,” Commissioner David...
HerStory: Driftwood’s interesting past
According to Norse mythology, the first humans, Ask and Embla, were formed from two pieces of driftwood, an ash and an elm, by the god Odin and his brothers, Vili and Ve. In less heavenly terms, driftwood is wood that has been washed onto the shore or beach of a sea, lake, or river by the action of winds, tides or waves. It provides shelter and food for birds, fish and other aquatic species as it floats in the ocean. Gribbles, shipworms, and bacteria decompose the wood and gradually turn it into nutrients that are reintroduced to the food web. Sometimes, the partially decomposed wood washes ashore, where it also shelters birds, plants, and other species. Driftwood can become the foundation for sand dunes.
NFL player flies high to raise money to help heal veterans with PTSD
Pompano Beach – Right before NFL free agent Jerome Baker went flying through the sky at about 500 mph in an Aero L-39 Albatros jet fighter, Michael Gardner joked that he was taking bets on when the linebacker would throw up. But 40 minutes and a few rolls later,...

Far from over: Atlantic Boulevard and Dixie Highway intersection project is still months away from completion
Pompano Beach – Although work crews have begun installing trees and landscaping at Atlantic Boulevard and Dixie Highway, drivers shouldn’t assume it’s the end of the road for construction. Sandra King, the city’s strategic communications administrator, told The New Pelican that the project won’t be finished for...
Catch of the Week: Big swords on tap this weekend
Pictured here is Aubrea Jeffers with a stud swordfish caught a few days back with John Michael Lavergne out of Hillsboro Inlet. These two anglers have been putting up solid catches of swords the last several weeks. There are lots of big fish traveling through right now and several boats landed fish over the 300 pound mark. The best of the bite has been in a depth of 1,600 feet of water and the bait of choice is the squid tentacle.
