New business applications hit records in Onondaga County and across NY in 2023
Syracuse, N.Y. — Onondaga County set a record for new business applications in 2023 as a post-pandemic surge showed no signs of slowing. Onondaga County wasn’t alone. A total of 39 of New York’s 62 counties set records for new business applications last year, according to census data.

30 businesses, nearly 300 residents receiving Rome tornado recovery aid
ROME — Rome Mayor Jeffrey M. Lanigan and Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr. announced new updates in Rome’s tornado recovery efforts at City Hall on Friday. They said the clean-up will take several weeks, and all city streets have been reopened except for the blocks in front of the damaged churches. They said they have given out $140,000 to more than 30 businesses from the Rome Emergency Business Fund, and just short of $750,000 from the Rome Victims Recovery Fund to roughly 279 residents so far. “We have a great community that has truly stepped up,” said Lanigan. “We’re going to keep moving forward, and I promise you we’re not slowing down.”

My office in Oriskany has a lot of pictures from the past. Since I also function as the president of the alumni association, we have a lot of old school mementoes. The other day, I happened to be looking at a pic of the 1948 mixed chorus at OCS. There were about 48 of them. Those days are long gone. What was evident, though, was how well-dressed and “normal” looking those kids were. Nice white dresses on the girls and slacks, white shirt and ties on the boys. I miss those days. This was long before fast foods and soda pop began to erode our national visage.
