Elephant Sculptures Visit Newport to Spread a Message
Starting on July 4, visit Newport to see the start of the 3,500-mile “The Great Elephant Migration” across America, with one-hundred elephants young and old. The fun part? These elephants are made of an invasive weed, Lantana camera, and they are an art exhibit made by The Coexistence Collective. The exhibit will be in four places across Newport: Rough Point, the Great Friends Meeting House, Salve Regina University along the Cliff Walk, and the Breakers. The elephants will be on view until September 7.

Herd of 100 Indian elephants taking up residence at multiple locations in Newport
A herd of 100 Indian elephants is taking up residence along the Cliff Walk as The Great Elephant Migration kicks off on July 4th for the summer. Each elephant in the herd has been meticulously crafted by The Coexistence Collective, a community of 200 indigenous Indian artisans from the Bettakurumba, Paniya, Kattunayakan and Soliga tribes in India’s Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.

Newport is in for a great treat with the arrival of The Great Elephant Migration beginning July 4, 2024. Newport Restoration Foundation (NRF) President and Director of Rough Point, Frankie Vagnone welcomes this installation and its exquisite craftsmanship as “symbols of a commitment to sustainability, livability and resiliency, the core components of the work we’re doing at NRF.” Vagnone indicated that “Rough Point is proud to be one of the host sites of this exhibition along with partners at Salve Regina University, The Preservation Society of Newport County and The Newport Historical Society, all coming together to be part of this Great Elephant Migration.”

The winery focuses on Cabernet Sauvignon, with grapes grown in low-fertility soils on the valley floor and its surrounding mountains using viticulture practices that influence its unique style of Cabernet.
