Remembering Monumenta: The Preservation Society to Celebrate 50th Anniversary of Landmark Newport Exhibition
On August 17, 1974, Newport became a canvas for a revolutionary exhibition that redefined outdoor sculpture. Monumenta, a pioneering display of 54 outdoor sculptures by 40 renowned artists, including Willem de Kooning, Louise Nevelson, Henry Moore, Barnett Newman, Richard Fleischner, David Smith, and Christo, transformed the landscape of this historic city. To commemorate this groundbreaking event, The Preservation Society of Newport County is hosting a symposium at Rosecliff on Saturday, August 17, marking the 50th anniversary of the “Sculpture in the Environment” symposium that inaugurated Monumenta.

New accessible Discovery Trail at Copicut Woods in Fall River opens
FALL RIVER, Mass. – The Trustees held a ribbon cutting to celebrate the opening of an accessible Discovery Trail at Copicut Woods on Indian Town Road in Fall River on Monday. The event featured brief remarks by Katie Theoharides, president and CEO of The Trustees. She was joined by several locally elected officials, including Fall River Mayor Paul Coogan, Maureen Flanagan from State Senator Michael Rodrigues’ office, and State Representatives Carole Fiola and Paul Schmid. Also on hand was Paul Jahnige, director of the Massachusetts Office of Outdoor Recreation and representatives from MassTrails and the Department of Conservation and Recreation.

Restoration of stone walls at Miantonomi Park is completed
The City of Newport and Preserve Rhode Island (Preserve RI) announced today that the restoration of Miantonomi Park’s stone walls has been completed. The project began last September when a 250-foot stretch of wall was repaired. The second phase, begun in June, finalizes the north entry point to the park and repairs approximately 336 feet of wall along Girard Avenue. Preserve RI, acting as project lead for the Scenic Aquidneck Coalition, has been working with the City of Newport on the repairs.

Newport Classical’s Music Festival closing weekend with pianist Llewellyn Sanchez-Werner
Julliard phenom Llewellyn Sanchez-Werner was one of the highlights of Newport Classical’s last weekend of the Music Festival, in his first solo concert with the organization. He put on a display of classical works mixed in with pieces that paid homage to his Mexican heritage. All of which was a delight to the packed audience at Emmanuel Church—the wonderful headquarters for Newport Classical—on Spring Street. Even a rogue bat tried to crash the concert at the beginning before wisely heading out the door.
