HBO's 'Gilded Age,' which is filmed in Newport, nabs 5 Emmy nominations

NEWPORT – The HBO series "The Gilded Age," set and filmed in part in Newport, picked up five Emmy Award nominations Wednesday for its second season.

The show, created by Julian Fellowes, who also created the popular period drama "Downton Abbey," is nominated for Best Drama Series, according to a list published by NBC News. It is up against "The Crown," "Fallout," "The Morning Show," "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," "Shogun," "Slow Horses" and "3 Body Problem."

And "Gilded Age" actors playing wealthy New York socialites locked in a new-money-versus-old-money battle were nominated for acting awards, according to the list.

Carrie Coon, who plays Bertha Russell, was nominated for Best Actress in a Drama Series, and Christine Baranski, who plays Russell's across-the-street neighbor Agnes Van Rhijn, was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

Coon is up against Maya Erskine, in "Mr. & Mrs. Smith"; Anna Sawai, "Shogun"; Imelda Staunton, "The Crown"; and two actors from "The Morning Show," Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon.

Baranski is up against four "Morning Show" actors: Nicole Beharie, Greta Lee, Karen Pittman and Holland Taylor, as well as two actors from "The Crown," Elizabeth Debicki and Lesley Manville.

"The Gilded Age" was also nominated for two other awards: Outstanding Production Design for a narrative period or fantasy program (one hour or more), and Outstanding Period Costumes for a series.

The series was not nominated for writing or directing awards.
