Remembering Monumenta: The Preservation Society to Celebrate 50th Anniversary of Landmark Newport Exhibition
On August 17, 1974, Newport became a canvas for a revolutionary exhibition that redefined outdoor sculpture. Monumenta, a pioneering display of 54 outdoor sculptures by 40 renowned artists, including Willem de Kooning, Louise Nevelson, Henry Moore, Barnett Newman, Richard Fleischner, David Smith, and Christo, transformed the landscape of this historic city. To commemorate this groundbreaking event, The Preservation Society of Newport County is hosting a symposium at Rosecliff on Saturday, August 17, marking the 50th anniversary of the “Sculpture in the Environment” symposium that inaugurated Monumenta.

Woman killed in Fall River pedestrian crash remembered as giving woman of God as services announced
A 67-year-old Dartmouth woman killed after being struck by a box truck on Joseph Drive in Fall River is being remembered as services have been announced. According to Gregg Miliote of the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, at around noon on Wednesday, two victims, the driver of the box truck, and three others were at 214 Joseph Drive to pick up a dresser. The six individuals were all employees or volunteers for the non-profit organization known as My Brother’s Keeper, which organizes drop offs and pick-ups of donated furniture.

Voluntown, CT – A man experiencing a medical emergency struck another vehicle head-on Saturday morning sending himself and two others to the hospital. Abigail Link, a Rhode Island College student teacher at Portsmouth High School, led her ceramics students in a project where they were asked to create their own ceramic figure representing their connection to the food system while reflecting on how their community interacts with this system. Inspired by a community engagement course where she had the opportunity to work with Rhode Island Food Policy Council and tour the Pell School Garden, Abigail was eager to bring her students into meaningful conversations about what is needed to build an equitable and resilient local food system.
