A Red Hook middle school welcomed students from three other boroughs for the school’s second e-sports tournament.

The tournament at Summit Academy charter school brings fun, games and a new opportunity for students and staff.

“It’s great for college readiness… more and more schools are starting to get teams, just like any other basketball team or any other football team,” said e-sports coach Joel Lopez.

Most of the kids might not be thinking about turning gaming into a career just yet, but students tell News 12 that they’re learning to enjoy their time at the school building more, thanks to e-sports.

“It's actually competitive, because using all your skills, you've got to competitively play against other people and see who can come out on top first,” said Lopez. “We teach students how to manage their anger and not break their controllers every time they lose and get upset.”

Organizers say they’re excited to see Summit Academy host future tournaments and hope that they can turn them into a monthly event.
