Perth Amboy Fire Department offers grilling safety tips for the summer season

Fire calls come in more frequently beginning Memorial Day weekend for the Perth Amboy Fire Department.

"The number one cause of fires in America is cooking fires and unattended fires. During the month of July, the highest number of fires from cooking happen at a grill,” said Chief Ed Mullen.

He pointed out several things to do before firing up the grill for the summer season. He says to check for animal nests and to make sure the grill is free from rust and that the hoses are clean.

Grills should remain 10 feet away from any structure and not under anything or near any vinyl siding.

According to statistics provided by Mullen, out of the over 10,000 grill fires across the country last year, 35% occurred because the grill was too close to a house.

He also emphasized keeping children and pets away from the cooking area.

If a grill does catch on fire, Mullen says to attempt to turn off the propane valve.

“That will cut off the fuel. Then, you'll want to close the top of the grill lid, and slowly back away and call 911,” he added.

Mullen says above all that if anything looks bad, refrain from using the grill.

“You always want to make sure there are no leaks. One thing you can do is spray a soapy solution right over the connection, right over the hose," he said.

When it comes to charcoal grills, make sure to let the charcoal sit to for a few days to completely burn out and then dispose of it carefully in a metal garbage can.
