Residents and tourists descended onto the Coney Island boardwalk ahead of Labor Day weekend. "Since the weather was nice we figured we'd hang out here for a while," said Rupert Peters, of East New York. The flood of people, equates to a boom in business for the area. The holiday weekend is seen as the last big money maker for businesses as kids head back to the classrooms. Some business owners are depending on a big pay day as they say this summer season hasn't been as good as in years past. "It's slower than last year, like 30% less," said vendor Hector Hoyer. Hoyer said he pays $30,000 to rent a coveted spot on the route from the train station to the beach for seven months of the year. He believes illegal vending has cut into his profits. "You know, there are rules, we follow the rules, we pay taxes," he said. Business owners tell News 12 it's unclear what has led to a decline in sales this summer. They question's whether shark sightings, crime or even wet weather has made an impact. "When it rains you know unfortunately there aren't as many people," said Melinda Veliz, of Tom's Coney Island. Business owners said they are hoping this holiday weekend they can make up what they didn't make throughout the summer. Swimming is not permitted unless a lifeguard is present, they will be on duty at NYC beaches through Sept. 8. "
