A fence recently installed at an illegal dumping site at 700 Gerard Ave. in Highbridge initially provided residents with some relief. The barrier now blocks what was once an open lot filled with trash, offering a temporary solution to the community’s problems. Residents like Darlene Jennings were hopeful that the new gate would keep troublemakers away, particularly those seeking shelter and engaging in drug use. Just a few weeks ago, the area was littered with needles, makeshift beds, and abandoned strollers. However, the problem has shifted just down the block. Another site, also fenced, has become a new dumping ground. Despite the fence, a large hole allows people to continue entering, leaving trash and other hazardous materials behind. Neighbors like Rebecca Shepherd and Jose Gonzalez say they are frustrated by the situation, calling it unsanitary and harmful to the community. The original lot is privately owned, but the new problem area falls under the Parks Department's jurisdiction. The department says they clean the site twice a week and have repaired the fence multiple times, though it continues to be damaged. The Department of Sanitation has increased surveillance for illegal dumping, while the Department of Health advises residents not to touch syringes and to report them by calling 311. "
