The first day of school for students of James J. Flynn Elementary in Perth Amboy won’t be in their familiar classrooms. A letter sent to parents says the school is awaiting air quality test results and is moving students to the old high school a mile away on Eagle Avenue. They will be there from Thursday, Sept. 5 through at least Wednesday, Sept. 11. The school hosted an open house on Wednesday night for parents. There’s signage directing kids where to go. “It seems as if it’s self-explanatory,” said parent Teanna Foxx. “The kids being as young as they are, I was a little afraid that because it was so big, they’d get lost. But it’s very, very straightforward.” But some families say this makes the morning rush even more complicated. “It’s changing our whole routine,” said parent Al Fazzolari. “It’s a little bit of an inconvenience, I’ll be honest with you. We stay on the other part of town.” “I’m going to have to call into work either late or call off my shift to make sure they get there on time,” said parent Christina Santana. The district says safety is a top priority, and the move is out of an abundance of caution. The return date is still up in the air. "It’s very worrisome because we have children that have asthma that are triggered by mold spores and air quality,” Santana said. “They do testing prior to them re-entering,” Foxx said. “So, I feel as though they’ll have enough information that they’ll need to know before letting the kids back into the building.”
News 12 has reached out to the district for more information and is waiting to hear back. "
