ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Governor Kathy Hochul announced the start of construction on a 76-unit mixed-use housing development on Thursday.

This new Alta Vista apartment building is being built near St. Joseph’s Park and will include a space for public events. With this new development, the city is using part of its budget from the $10 million New York State Downtown Revitalization Initiative award.

The apartment building will be constructed on four vacant lots on Franklin, Pleasant, and Andrews Streets. It is supposed to be a 6-story stone building with 76 apartments and 2,600 square feet of space for free public event programming and private occasions.

All 76 units will be affordable to households earning below 80 percent of the area’s median income. 14 of those apartments will be reserved for households experiencing homelessness or who are at risk of homelessness.

The project’s developer is Ibero-American Development Corporation and Edgemere Development, Inc. is the consulting developer.

“Tackling the housing shortage means building and preserving affordable homes in every region of New York,” Governor Hochul said. “This new development builds upon my administration’s continued investments to revitalize downtown Rochester and ensure that more New Yorkers have a safe, stable place to call home.”

According to Hochul’s office, amenities will include free high-speed broadband and Wi-Fi internet, a laundry room, a community room with a kitchen, multiple lounges, on-site parking, tenant storage, an outdoor patio, and an indoor children’s play area.

The households will also have access to on-site supportive services and rental subsidies funded through the Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative and administered by the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance.
