ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the flags on state buildings will be flown at half-staff on Monday to honor the NYS Thruway Authority worker who died in the I-90 crash.

On May 9, Vincent “Vinny” Giammarva, was working in a work zone on I-90 in the Town of Chili when a tractor-trailer struck him and another NYS Thruway employee, Mark Vera.

NYSP said Giammarva was pronounced dead at the scene while Vera was taken to a hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Governor Hochul said, “Our hearts are with the Giammarva family as they grieve the senseless loss of their husband and father,” Hochul continued, “Our thruway workers deserve our courtesy as drivers – their lives depend on us. New Yorkers should remain alert, slow down, and move over when approaching a work zone.”

According to Governor Hochul, Giammarva was a 19-year employee of the New York State Thruway Authority and left behind his wife, two children, and many loved ones.
