ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Funding is now available to New York schools and bus drivers for zero-emission school buses.

New York State announced the funding was distributed through the New York School Bus Incentive Program, which supports the purchases of electric buses, charging infrastructure, and plans for fleet electrification.

The incentive program also gives charging vouchers and helps develop fleet electrification plans.

According to Governor Hochul, the funding is to help schools transition to zero-emission technology to improve air quality and reduce pollution.

“With increased funding for schools to transition to clean transportation options, we are reducing harmful emissions and pollution, helping to ensure that both students and residents are breathing clean, fresh air and enjoying healthier environments to live, work, and do business,” said Governor Hochul.

The plan remains divisive as some state lawmakers and voters question the costs of the buses, whether the buses can survive certain weather conditions, and infrastructure. Some lawmakers are calling for the deadline to be pushed back.

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority says over 75 districts applied to purchase electric buses. They also report that half of New York’s schools are working with NYSERDA to create fleet electrification plans.
