ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – A man is expected to spend 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to new felony charges against him Monday for the assault of a Rochester police officer last year.

According to prosecutors, last year Sept. 25, an officer went to the area of Seventh Street in Rochester to investigate gunfire when he encountered Jamie James, who is now 27 years old.

At the time of the incident, the officer attempted to pull over James who then drove off, crashing into a pole before running away again.

After a brief chase through a backyard, James punched the officer multiple times and attempted to steal his gun. Rochester police said the officer shot James after an unsuccessful attempt to tase him. Both James and the officer were taken to the hospital with injuries.

Two loaded handguns and narcotics were taken by police in this investigation.

James, a two-time violent felony offender, is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 6. He’s expected to receive 15 years in prison and five years of post-release supervision.
