GREECE, N.Y. (WROC) — Over 10,000 students within the Greece Central School District started classes today.

“Opening day and the first day of school is one of the best things of the year. So, I’m excited to get the year started,” said Greece Superintendent Kathleen Graupman.

Graupman is the current superintendent of the Greece Central School District but she’s retiring this year, after working in education for over 30 years — she already has a replacement ready to step into her shoes.

When is the first day of school in your district?

“Jeremy and I are very similar in terms of our values and how we approach things,” she said. “We work really hard in this district to build open communication and to build a culture of trust and that’s something that I know that he’s going to continue that he values.”

Graupman is talking about her successor, Jeremy Smalline — both say they’re confident the transition will be smooth.

“Really get into schools,” he said. “Talk to teachers, talk to staff, talk to parent, and really just ensure some continuity as she transitions.”

Graupman says while this is a bittersweet moment, she thinks the district will be just fine.

“I’ve worked in education for over 32 years, so to make a decision to retire is a big step. I feel really positive about it, and we’re in great hands here in the district.”

Other school districts are set to start throughout the week.
