Spice of India opens storefront in Binghamton

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A year-old start-up eatery has quickly transitioned from delivery to a brick-and-mortar restaurant due to its popularity.

Spice of India opened at the corner of Vestal Avenue and Mary Street on Binghamton’s Southside earlier this month. It offers a wide variety of Indian cuisine from various regions of the country.

Owner and chef Manish Verma grew up in a cooking family as his maternal great grandfather, grandfather and mother all worked in eateries in India.

Spice of India was originally launched as a delivery service on weekends with Verma cooking his dishes at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Commercial Kitchen.

Verma says the demand sped up his business plan.

“I was expecting this whole thing to run for three or four years, that was my initial idea. I’ll open something, typically any business takes a couple years to get off the ground. But within six months, we were out of space, and we knew this is something people want, and they appreciate, and they are responding to it, so let’s go ahead and take the next step,” said Verma.

Verma says that while common Indian dishes like butter chicken and chicken tikka masala are popular, he’s received a lot of positive feedback about his wide variety of vegetarian and vegan dishes. And he says it’s a great value with all items priced under $20.

Spice of India is open Wednesday through Monday from 11:30 to 11 and Tuesdays from 4:30 to 11.

Delivery is available through Uber Eats, DoorDash and Grubhub.
