In Colusa, California, and across our state and great nation, Memorial Day is more than a long weekend. It's a solemn day of remembrance, a time to honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

We decorate their graves with flowers and flags, but their true memorials are etched in the freedoms we often take for granted. Their legacy lives on in the laughter of children playing freely in parks, in the opportunities for education and growth, in the quiet moments of prayer in our places of worship.

Each fallen hero was a thread in the fabric of our nation, and their absence leaves a hole that can never be filled. But even in loss, we find strength. Their sacrifice reminds us of the fragility of life and the preciousness of liberty. It inspires us to be better citizens, to cherish our loved ones, and to strive for a world worthy of their sacrifice.

This Memorial Day, let us remember not just their names, but their stories. Let us teach our children about their courage and selflessness. Let us honor their memory not just with words, but with deeds.
