Mountain Lion Sightings Reported in New York Despite Said Extinction

BUFFALO, NY - Mountain lions, also known as eastern cougars, once roamed extensively throughout New York State. However, these majestic big cats have not had a native, self-sustaining population in New York since the late 1800s.

Despite this, there have been a few isolated sightings over the years, sparking interest and concern among residents.

According to the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), each of these rare sightings involved cougars that were not native to New York. In some cases, the sightings were of captive mountain lions that had escaped from licensed facilities within the state.

Another notable instance involved a wild cougar that embarked on an extraordinary journey, traveling nearly 1,800 miles from its native population in South Dakota and passing through New York, according to the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).

While reports of mountain lion sightings are relatively common, they are often cases of mistaken identity. Many animals, including wild bobcats, fishers, coyotes, and even domestic pets, are frequently misidentified as cougars.

The DEC urges individuals who believe they have seen a mountain lion to look for physical evidence, such as tracks or scat, and to document any findings with photographs. These reports can then be submitted to the DEC for investigation.

The DEC also addresses persistent rumors suggesting that the department has released cougars into the wild to control deer populations.

These claims, often fueled by internet rumors and fabricated images, are entirely false. The DEC has never released cougars in New York, and the idea that the state is using these predators as a form of wildlife management is a misconception, according to the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).

For more detailed information on mountain lions and how to report a sighting, residents are encouraged to visit the DEC's website.
