SACO, ME - Amtrak continues to play a vital role in Maine's transportation network, connecting residents and visitors to key locations along the state's coast.

According to Amtrak, in FY 2023, Amtrak operated 12 trains daily in Maine, all as part of the Amtrak Downeaster route, which runs from Boston to Brunswick. This service has become a crucial link for many in the state, providing reliable transportation for both daily commuters and tourists.

According to Amtrak, among the stations served, Portland remains the busiest, with 180,288 passengers recorded in the fiscal year. Following Portland, Brunswick and Saco saw significant ridership, with 83,230 and 56,431 passengers, respectively.

However, not all stations are equally busy. Old Orchard Beach, while a popular summer destination, had the least usage with 19,748 passengers in FY 2023. This lower number is likely due to its seasonal nature, as the station primarily serves beachgoers during the warmer months, according to Amtrak.

Overall, Maine's Amtrak stations handled a total of 424,773 passengers throughout the year.

Despite challenges such as the need for cooperation with host railroads and occasional delays, the Downeaster route continues to provide a valuable service to the state.
