Black Bear Sightings Reported in Kansas Despite Said Extinction

TOPEKA, KS - Black bears, once native to Kansas, have long been considered extinct in the state. The last known population of black bears in Kansas disappeared in the late 19th century due to habitat loss and extensive hunting.

According to Fort Hays State University, despite their official extinction in the state, there have been occasional sightings reported over the years, particularly in the eastern and southeastern regions of Kansas.

According to Fort Hays State University, these sightings are often attributed to bears wandering into Kansas from neighboring states like Missouri and Oklahoma, where black bear populations are stable or increasing. The bears are likely following natural migration patterns or seeking new territories, especially during the breeding season.

While these sightings are rare, they highlight the possibility that black bears could eventually re-establish themselves in Kansas if suitable habitats are available.

However, as of now, Kansas does not have a resident black bear population, and the sightings remain isolated incidents rather than signs of a resurgence of the species in the state, according to Forty Hays State University.
