First five $50,000 winners of Colorado’s Comeback Cash Scholarship Drawing announced

(TRINIDAD, Colo.) Colorado Governor Jared Polis was joined by Dr. Angie Paccione, Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Higher Education Thursday to announce the initial five winners of Colorado's Comeback Cash Scholarship Drawing for $50,000.

The young vaccinated Coloradans who won this week's scholarships drawing are as follows:

• Natalie M. of Centennial
• Arianna Garcia (age 14) of Longmont
• Liam Atkins (age 15) of Boulder
• Brett Cheney (age 16) of Mesa County
• Gabriella Sleight (age 14) of Littleton

Thomas M. of Steamboat Springs also won the $50,000 scholarship, however, he handed it over to another young resident since he already has a full-ride scholarship secured, according to a press release from the Governor's office.

“Congratulations to our very first winners of the Colorado Comeback Cash Scholarship drawing,” said Gov. Polis. “As some of the younger Coloradans eligible to receive the incredibly effective vaccine, I thank you for doing your part to protect yourself, your family, your classmates, and other members of your community."

The Colorado Comeback Cash Scholarship Drawing involves 25 vaccinated Coloradans ages 12 through 17 being automatically eligible for $50,000 scholarships randomly chosen over the course of five weeks. There are still four drawings that will take place on Mondays, with winners being announced Thursdays on June 17, June 24, July 1 and July 8.

The $50,000 funds will be put into a CollegeInvest account for the winning students to utilize once they go onto college, including higher and technical education or credential programs. The funds can be left in the account to be used for later educational use and will earn interest over time.

"This lifesaving vaccine is our ticket for students to return to the classroom, and an opportunity to win a $50,000 scholarship, which can open a multitude of doors for students pursuing advanced education," Gov. Polis said. "I encourage you, whether you’re in high school or in your 60’s, to make a plan today to get this vaccine.”
