A homeless man wielding a machete slashed another person in an unprovoked attack near a pavilion on the Florida Boardwalk shortly after 8 a.m. on Friday.

Deputies responded quickly to multiple 911 calls and arrived on the scene. The suspect then ignored their orders to drop his weapon and advanced aggressively on them.

Both deputies from the County Sheriff's Office used their weapons in self-defense. The deputies attempted to save the suspect's life, but he died at the scene.

In the initial incident, a tourist suffered a significant laceration to his shoulder and was taken to the local Medical Center for treatment.

Three minutes after receiving the call, deputies arrived on the scene. Despite their pleas for the armed individual to drop his weapon, he instead rushed at them with it. It's a terrible situation.

The incident was recorded by the deputy's body cameras.

The deputies will be on paid leave while an investigation is conducted, as is standard procedure.

The investigation's findings will be forwarded to the Florida State Attorney's Office for review.
