A 21-year-old Breckenridge woman, who was a rising star in the mixed martial arts community, was killed Sunday in a two-vehicle crash near Moorhead.
The Minnesota State Patrol said Shalie D. Lipp was a passenger in a Chevy Malibu traveling eastbound on Interstate 94 on the Red River Bridge, which connects Minnesota and North Dakota, around 11:30 a.m. Sunday.
The Chevy Malibu, driven by a 35-year-old West Fargo man, "made contact" with a Jeep Cherokee also traveling eastbound on the bridge, according to the State Patrol's crash report.
The driver of the Chevy Malibu and the driver and two passengers of the Jeep Cherokee were all wearing seatbelts and uninjured. Lipp was not wearing her seatbelt, according to the crash report.
The crash remains under investigation.
The Wahpenton Daily News published a feature last week about Lipp's recent travels to Thailand to train and compete.
According to the feature, Lipp was a member of the Academy of Combat Arts in Fargo. She was scheduled to fight on May 20 in the main event at Ignite No Mercy 11 at at Kent Freeman Arena in Detroit Lakes.
"My whole heart goes into training for these fights," Lipp wrote on Facebook in March.
Among those paying tribute to Lipp was her personal trainer Eric Sweeney.
"My heart is absolutely broken. You were such a wonderful human, full of promise and drive," he wrote. "One of the few people I've ever met that was truly reaching for greatness. And I will never forget you. It is beyond my minds capacity today to think that I won't see you this week ...or ever again. We were just cracking the code
"Being your friend will change me forever. It already has. Thank you for all of the moments. All of our discussions, both personal and professional. The laughs, the tears, and every emotion in between. I will remember all of them. I am grateful for all of them."
