Stanley Volunteer Fire Department status report

The Stanley Volunteer Fire Department (SVFD) in Stanley, Virginia answered 57 calls for the month of May, reported Fire Chief Terry A. Pettit.

Chief Pettit reported that there were sixteen emergency calls, fourteen medical calls and twenty-seven non-emergency calls. The total for the year so far is 263 calls.

A breakdown of the calls show that the department responded to thirteen medical calls, nine standby control burns, seven vehicle accidents, six lock outs, four control burns, three structure fires (house, outbuilding and garage), two fire safety presentations, two LP Gas leaks, two brush fires and attended one parade, one standby funeral event, standby fireworks display, woodpile fire, smoke investigation, automatic medical alarm, standby truck and tractor pull, CO alarm and assist motorist.

An average of 11 members responded to each emergency call and an average of 7 members responded to each medical call. The most members on an emergency call were 29 and the least was 4

There were 714.8 miles placed on apparatus and there was $100,000.00 in fire damage for the month. The department assisted the Stanley Rescue Squad on 14 calls, Page County EMS on two calls, Shenandoah Fire Department one call, Luray Fire Dept. one call, Shenandoah National Park one call and the Frederick County Fire and Rescue one call. The department was assisted by the Luray Fire Dept. on one call and the Shenandoah Fire Dept. on one call.

There were three injuries during the month due to vehicle accidents and one outbuilding was a total loss due to fire. Three pickup trucks and one car were totaled due to vehicle accidents. There was 1 acre burned because of wildland fires.

Members responding to the most emergency calls were Chief Pettit16, Bruce Stoneberger 12, Derek Franks 10, Mike Lloyd 10, Brennan Stoneberger 9, Ariel Beales 8, Colin Huffman 8, J.T. Long 8 and Jason Pettit 8.

Members answering the most medical calls were Chief Pettit 14, Andrew Stoneberger 9, Ariel Beales 8, Mike Lloyd 8, Derek Franks 7, Brennan Stoneberger 7, Dale Housden 6 and Colin Huffman 6.

Members answering the most non-emergency calls were Chief Pettit 19, J.T. Long 11, Mike Lloyd 10, Derek Franks 7, Colin Huffman 7, Chance Wallace 7 and Caleb Purdham 6.

The SVFD will celebrate its 75th Anniversary during an upcoming, two-day community event. On Friday, September 22, the department will host an open house at the station from 6-9 p.m. This event will feature station and apparatus tours, gear drills, demonstrations, door prizes and more. On Saturday, September 23, the SVFD will host a "fun day" at Ed Good Park, from 4-9 p.m. This event will feature a bounce house, face painting, corn hole, a dunk tank, door prizes and more.
