Update: Despite information received from a worker preparing the building earlier (painting, etc.) the Simi Valley branch is still not open as of October 23. The lights are on and fixtures up. A worker at the CBC Federal Credit Union who occupies the same space said that they heard "it's taking longer than expected." I'll update this article as soon as more information is available.

Though Simi Valley came close to getting a Dunkin’ Donuts in 2016, that never materialized. Since then, if you craved their famous coffee, donuts (also known as doughnut) or other menu items, like their trademark Munchkins, you needed to travel to Westlake or farther.

But this time, it’s really happening. This branch will be located in the Mountain Gate Plaza by CBC Credit Union, in front of Vallarta’s. Per the worker I asked at the site today, the shop is painted and almost ready to go, with an estimated opening of next week. Here’s a picture of the work in progress.

Dunkin’ Donuts opened its first store in 1950 in Quincy, Massachusetts. The original name was actually “Open Kettle” and was founded by Bill Rosenberg. At the time it sold donuts and coffee so with input from company executives at the time, he changed the name to Dunkin’ Donuts. Since then it’s grown exponentially to become one of the largest coffee and donuts shops in the world with almost 13,000 locations worldwide in 42 countries.

Not only has the company grown but so has their menu. Serving 3 million customers a day, it now has 52 varieties of donuts and “more than a dozen coffee beverages as well as an array of bagels, breakfast sandwiches, and other baked goods.”

The original owner went public with the company in 1966 “and was acquired by Allied Domecq PLC in 1990. In 2005, Dunkin’ Donuts was purchased by a consortium of private equity firms led by Bain Capital Partners for $2.4 billion.”

Though the coffee seems to have a consistent flavor, it’s interesting to note “the company sources its coffee from more than 30 countries and roast more than 2 million pounds of coffee each month. Dunkin’ Donuts offers a variety of coffee flavors, including original, French vanilla, hazelnut, and mocha. The company also offers iced coffees, cold brew coffees, and espresso drinks.”

A of 2019, “Dunkin’ announced that coffee sales made up 61% of their total revenue.”

Here's hoping this branch is successful! Don't forget the download the app and start dreaming about those Munchkins!
