In a thought-provoking dialogue, there's a growing emphasis on the importance of using precise terminology, urging both news media and politicians to discard vague and politically correct phrases, such as "Emotionally Disturbed Person." The call is for the adoption of clear and unambiguous language when referring to killers and murderers.

The central message is unequivocal: while it's true that everyone may experience moments of emotional disturbance in their lives, these individuals transcend that category – they are killers and murderers. What's even more disconcerting is that some actively seek notoriety through their heinous acts. The news media often unintentionally contributes to making these criminals household names, adding to their notoriety.

In a dedicated episode of the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast, this pressing issue is confronted head-on. The plea is for the recognition of the urgency of this matter and a cessation of the practice of using euphemisms that could inadvertently romanticize these wrongdoers.

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) delivers a comprehensive definition of emotional disturbance, encompassing conditions that manifest specific characteristics over an extended period, significantly impeding a child's educational performance. These characteristics include an inability to learn that can't be attributed to intellectual, sensory, or health factors; challenges in forming and maintaining satisfactory interpersonal relationships; displaying inappropriate behavior or feelings in typical circumstances; a persistent mood of unhappiness or depression; and a tendency to develop physical symptoms or fears linked to personal or school-related issues. It's crucial to note that emotional disturbance includes schizophrenia but excludes socially maladjusted children unless an emotional disturbance is diagnosed.

As seen in IDEA's definition, emotional disturbances have implications beyond the emotional realm, affecting an individual's physical, social, or cognitive skills depending on the specific mental disorder involved. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) emphasizes that mental illnesses, as medical conditions, disrupt a person's thinking, emotions, mood, ability to relate to others, and daily functioning. Just as diabetes is a disorder of the pancreas, mental illnesses are medical conditions that often lead to a diminished capacity to cope with life's ordinary demands.

Characteristic behaviors observed in children with emotional disturbances include hyperactivity, aggression, social withdrawal, immaturity, and learning difficulties. Additionally, children with severe emotional disturbances may display distorted thinking, excessive anxiety, unusual motor acts, and abnormal mood swings. These behaviors signal an inability to effectively cope with their environment or peers.

While emotional health pertains to a person's level of happiness and life satisfaction, mental health encompasses cognitive functioning and psychological disorders. To clarify, a "Mental Case" is defined as a person who is mentally unsound.

The conversation extends to an examination of the role of the news media in potential future mass shootings and the extent of their involvement. The inquiry delves into whether the media bears partial responsibility or plays a role in these tragic incidents.
