Martinsburg, WV - Two West Virginia State Troopers are now in the process of recovery following a violent incident on Sunday night in Martinsburg. Troopers A.A. Bean and C.D. Spessert, affiliated with the Martinsburg Detachment, encountered gunfire from 60-year-old Tobias Ganey while attempting to serve an arrest warrant for battery at his residence on Connell Street.

The troopers initially sought cooperation from Ganey to open the door, but faced with refusal, they engaged in a dialogue through the closed door. Upon entering Ganey's residence, a harrowing turn of events unfolded as he opened fire with a handgun, leading to a fatal exchange of gunfire that resulted in Ganey's demise.

Trooper A.A. Bean sustained four gunshot wounds, and Trooper C.D. Spessert was shot once during the incident. Both troopers are now in recovery at the Berkeley Medical Center. However, the toll on Trooper Bean is particularly severe, requiring surgery, including the amputation of part of his left leg.

Sgt. Zachary Nine of the Martinsburg Detachment acknowledged the challenging period for the West Virginia State Police family, expressing optimism for the troopers' recovery.

Senior Trooper Abraham Bean and Trooper Cardin Spessert were executing the arrest warrant for battery at Ganey's residence. Despite extended communication efforts, Ganey resisted, prompting the troopers to enter the house. The ensuing gunfire exchange led to Ganey's death at the scene.

Admitted to the hospital, Trooper Spessert is under observation, while Trooper Bean underwent surgery for serious injuries, including the leg amputation.

The incident unfolded at 10:50 p.m. on Sunday in the 100 block of Connell Street in Martinsburg. Troopers Bean and Spessert engaged in prolonged communication with Ganey, who remained uncooperative. Upon entering the house, the troopers faced gunfire from Ganey's handgun. In the exchange, Bean suffered four gunshot wounds, and Spessert was hit once.

Major James Mitchell confirmed the amputation of Trooper Bean's left leg, underscoring the critical condition resulting from multiple gunshot wounds.

Despite the harrowing incident, a wave of support has emanated from fellow law enforcement officers, with dozens of West Virginia troopers and state police from Virginia demonstrating solidarity at the hospital. State Police Superintendent Col. Jack Chambers visited Trooper Bean, and a prayer service was led by current and former state police chaplains.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty, with Mitchell expressing hope for continued support throughout Trooper Bean's recovery.
