Intrigue from the Super Bowl to the All-Star game

I have too many thoughts and topics bouncing around in my brain to only expound on one. This week I’m going to write a little about a lot.

I’m old enough to remember Mike Shanahan and Ed McCaffrey winning three Super Bowls together. They won a Super Bowl in San Francisco and two in Denver with Shanahan coaching and McCaffrey playing receiver.

Their sons are now in San Francisco - like their fathers decades before - trying to win their first Super Bowl together. I would think it was even cooler if it didn’t make me feel so old.

The Baltimore Ravens held the Kansas City Chiefs to 17 points, but couldn’t beat them. Lamar Jackson will not get the credit deserves, through little fault of his own. He was not perfect, but his teammates and coaches were far from it.

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is a Tar Heel. If you read my column on the regular, you know I love everything about the University of North Carolina, so I was thrilled to find out he suited up for the Tar Heels.

I felt bad for not remembering him, but then, after looking him up, I realized he suited up for North Carolina but never played. Whatever he lacked athletically, he clearly didn’t lack in intellect. It seems he is a very bright fellow and he certainly did a remarkable job this year.

Speaking of North Carolina and the Tar Heels, they play Duke in basketball this Saturday. Prepare for the greatest rivalry in sports. Sorry ,Buckeye and Wolverine fans, y’all can be the second greatest.

LeBron James was named to his 20th All-Star game, and while he is nowhere near as athletic as he was two decades ago, I would argue that he is a better basketball player now. There is no precedent for this.

LeBron will turn 40 later this year, but if I told you to pick a starting five lineup of current players to play a single game for your life, who are you putting ahead of LeBron James? In a game for my life, there are not five current players I trust more to win in the clutch than LeBron James.

For that to be more true now than it was 20 years ago when he was selected to his first All-Star game… that’s crazy. I have been told that father time is undefeated, but Tom Brady and LeBron James really have me questioning things.

I found out that former NBA guard Damon Stoudamire was coaching Georgia Tech last night when I watched them beat UNC. It is his first year coaching in Atlanta and he has already beaten both Carolina and Duke. I wouldn’t be surprised if that man got offered a contract extension already.
