Thurston County issued a warning of a “jury scam” to residents in its latest “Friday Five” weekly county update.

Residents were warned of individuals calling and claiming the resident missed jury duty and that a warrant was issued in their name. According to the county update, the callers identify themselves as a Thurston County Sheriff’s deputy and have the citizen’s name and address, in addition to their phone number. That information is available through public records and is not associated with jury duty.

The caller then provides a number they claim is associated with the missed jury service, but the number provided is not related to jury duty. Court staff will never ask residents or potential jurors over the phone, mail or email for money or confidential information including social security numbers, birth dates or bank account information, according to the county update.

Residents who receive a phone call from a jury scammer should hang up and report the incident to police. Visit the jury service page at https://www.thurstoncountywa.gov/departments/superior-court/jury-service for more information.
