Shanahan Looking to Overcome Shocking Super Bowl Stat

The San Francisco 49ers are the favorites to hoist the Lombardi trophy against the Kansas City Chiefs as Kyle Shanahan's juggernaut looks to finally cash in on their dominance over the last few years.

But when it comes to Shanahan and Super Bowls, things haven't worked out so well as when he has been a coach, he hasn't tasted the ultimate success.

In 2017, he was the offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons in the infamous 34-28 overtime loss, and in 2020, he was the 49ers' head coach who lost a 10-point fourth-quarter lead to Patrick Mahomes .

With so much on the line for Shanahan in terms of his coaching persona, a mind-blowing stat has popped up regarding his teams in the fourth quarter of Super Bowls. In the two Super Bowls that Shanahan has been a part of, his teams have been outscored 46-0 in the fourth quarter plus overtime.

The 49ers conceded 21 unanswered points against the Chiefs and 25 vs. the Patriots (19 in the fourth quarter, six in overtime).

So when it comes to playing good football in the fourth quarter of the biggest game of the year, things go a little south for Shanahan and his teams.

Additionally, went trailing heading into the fourth quarter, San Francisco is 1-30 under Shanahan.

This is why some think that if the game is close or the 49ers are trailing heading into the fourth quarter in the Super Bowl, bad things could happen and Patrick Mahomes could win his third ring.

There are always good times to buck the trend and if Shanahan is to put those shocking stats to bed, then doing it in the Super Bowl would be as good a time as any.
