In an interview with Howard Stern , Billy Joel discussed his dream roster for a supergroup band, which includes a Police-man and an Eagle, but not a Beatle.

From explaining the meaning of his first original song in 17 years to revealing that he witnessed the infamous Chevy Chase and Bill Murray ’s SNL fight, the two talked and joked about it all. Perhaps the most surprising revelation, however, was that Billy Joel has considered being in a band.

“You know what I was thinking about you,” Howard Stern said, thinking out loud. “Wouldn't it have been great if George Harrison and Tom Petty had asked you to be in the Traveling Willburys ?

“I wanted to do something like that,” Joel replied quickly. Traveling Willburys are known as one of the biggest and most successful supergroups, or a band built from the long term collaboration of normally individual musicians. As it turns out, Billy Joel has already considered making a supergroup himself. “I thought about putting together a band: me, Don Henley and Sting , oh and maybe John Mayer on guitar,” he continued, with interviewer Stern showing excitement and approval.

“Whoa! Well, let's do it!” said an emphatic Stern, before the musician noted that the superstars were busy. “Is that what they told you?” he joked.

There’s no malice behind the group not existing, Joel clarified. Rather, they’re all just busy in their own careers. “You always say to the other guys, ‘yeah I'll see you on the road, we’ll get together’ and you never do it,” he explained nonchalantly. Joel still manages to keep in touch with his fellow musicians, noting that he calls Sting and Paul McCartney regularly. When Stern pressed him on starting a group with McCartney, Joel simply shook his head. “But he was in the superest group of all time, The Beatles ! I don't have the nerve to do that, I can't,” he said at the thought of asking McCartney to join a band.

“You want me to say something to this guy?” Stern began. “Would you be offended if I called Paul McCartney and said, ‘Paul I have a fabulous idea. I want you to just spend a few hours with Billy Joel, maybe writing a few songs.’ What do, you don't mind?”

“You can say whatever you like, go ahead” Joel responded. With that, it seems like Howard Stern set himself up as the founder of a new supergroup - but time will tell if that phone call actually works!
