Continuing down memory lane, this is a look at some of the top country hits of 1989 a staggering 35 years ago. With music's uncanny ability to take us away to the places we were, the people we were with, and the thing we were doing, walk with us back in time.

    "Two Dozen Roses" by Shenandoah

This band had a more traditional sound than most of the "urban cowboy" feel of 1980's country music. "Two Dozen Roses" was one of three chart topping hits from 1989 along with "The Church On Cumberland Road" and "Sunday In The South" from the group who took their name from the Shenandoah River in Virginia. The band recently re-released this catchy song along with modern country music sensation, Luke Combs, in fall of 2023.

"If Tomorrow Never Comes" by Garth Brooks

This 1989 hit was Brook's first number one single on the Country Billboard charts. It went on to be voted the Favorite Country Single at the 1991 American Music Awards. This song became referred to as Brooks' "signature song" and his most popular song for other artists to cover, including Irish singer Ronan Keating.

"I'm No Stranger To The Rain" by Keith Whitley

Released in 1989 this was Whitley's final single released while he was alive. Tragically after years of alcohol abuse Whitley passed away from alcohol intoxication at the young age of 34 years old. On the 1995 tribute album to Whitley, Joe Diffie covered it.

"Deeper Than The Holler" by Randy Travis

This love song uses metaphors to describe his love for a woman. It was a chart topper for the Grammy Award winner. It was his sixth consecutive single as well as his eighth overall single. Unfortunately, Travis suffered a traumatic stroke in 2013 and he no longer performs but occasionally makes appearances.

"I Don't Want To Spoil The Party" by Rosanne Cash

This one might come as a slight surprise, as it's a cover of the song by the Beatles. Originally written by John Lennon, this version by Rosanne Cash was the only Lennon song to ever top the country charts. Rosanne Cash is the eldest daughter of the great Johnny Cash and his first wife, Vivian. This was her last number one hit.

"Why'd You Come In Here Looking Like That" by Dolly Parton

Parton recorded this catchy tune in 1989 and it went on to be her 22nd number one country hit. This song stayed on the country charts for 20 weeks total while also enjoying a week at number one. Parton performed this song when she hosted Saturday Night Live on April 15, 1989.
