"The Outsiders" was released in 1983 and propelled numerous young actors to big time stardom.

The film's director, Francis Ford Coppola, shared vintage audition footage from the production of Tom Cruise , Diane Lane, Ralph Macchio, Rob Lowe, Matt Dillon, Emilio Estevez, Patrick Swayze, and more. The group was trying out for roles as the story's gang of teenage Oklahoma greasers in the '60s. The movie based off of the 1967 novel of the same name.

"42 years ago we cast “The Outsiders” in a unique way. We had all the actors together on a soundstage and would alternate different actors reading for different roles," Coppola wrote in the post's caption.

"It was interesting because each of them was watching their competition, so while it could’ve been a volatile situation, it turned into a very positive one. There emerged the natural respect and sense of colleagueship among them. The result worked beautifully and reminded me of my days as a camp counselor," he concluded.

"Feels like this was just yesterday," Rob Lowe commented on the post.

Ralph Macchio also joined in the comments section, writing, "These auditions and this film experience still inform me today."

"The Outsiders" hit theaters March 25, 1983.
