Insider Details Crazy Story of How 49ers Secured PurdyPurdy

    By Adam Schultz,

    2024-03-02

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, also known as Mr. Irrelevant as he was the last pick taken in the 2022 NFL Draft, has taken the league by storm since becoming the starter.

Not much was expected of Purdy when he landed on the 49ers roster, but through several injuries to other quarterbacks in Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo, he got his chance and hasn't looked back.

But his journey to becoming a 49er has not been told all too often, until ESPN's Adam Schefter detailed exactly how Purdy wound up on Kyle Shanahan's roster.

“The draft where the 49ers in 2017 had the second overall pick, Patrick Mahomes was in that draft,” Schefter said on the Pardon My Take Podcast. “They didn’t do any work on him because they thought the following offseason, Kirk Cousins was leaving Washington. So, Kirk Cousins is leaving Washington, they thought he would want to be there, they would want him there and it’s a layup.

“What happens is New England calls up San Francisco that Halloween and is like ‘Hey we gotta move on from Jimmy Garoppolo, just give us a two’ (second-round pick), they do that which blows up the Kirk Cousins plan. But back to that draft in 2017, they moved up in the third round to take C.J. Beathard. When C.J. Beathard left after four years and signed with Jacksonville, the 49ers got a compensatory pick, a seventh-round draft pick, and with that pick, that they got from the draft in which they bypassed Patrick Mahomes, they took Brock Purdy.”

It is funny how things work out, isn't it?

Mahomes, who is now a two-time MVP winner and a three-time Super Bowl champion was there for the 49ers to take, but the Patriots changed the Kirk Cousins to San Francisco plans and in the end, the 49ers would end up with Purdy.

Since becoming the starter, Purdy has been superb as he has a 17-4 record and has thrown for 5,654 yards, 44 touchdowns, and just 15 interceptions.

No longer Mr. Irrelevant, the story of how Purdy eventually became a 49er is certainly an interesting one.
