It’s been a long time since Camila Cabello joined forces with her fellow X-Factor competitors. Since her TV talent show origins, we’ve seen the singer-songwriter rise to fame with supergroup Fifth Harmony and ultimately, leave bandmates Normani , Ally Brooke , Dinah Jane , and Lauren Jauregui . “I started distancing myself from the group vision,” she said in the new podcast interview . “It felt like, you know, they were still really passionate and into that and so, I was just like, ‘I’m not happy here anymore, it doesn’t feel aligned.'”

Rather than any rumored feuds with her bandmates, Camila recalled how she felt her musical interests shift. Eventually, she started secretly writing music in between her performances and work with Fifth Harmony. She explained, “I can remember waking up on tour and going to my hotel room at, like, 7AM and going to my garage band and, like, writing songs, cause I didn’t want to do it while everybody was there and I had such a passion that turned into writing,”

That passion has clearly worked out for Cabello, given her writing credits on hit single “Havana” and songs for other artists, like Pitbull ’s “Hey Ma” and Bazzi ’s “Beautiful.” Though they had their fair share of post-breakup shade, Cabello and Fifth Harmony are turning a new leaf. For the 27-year-old, that means focusing on her own gratitude and nostalgia. “I feel like I can really focus on and remember the really joyful times. And I grew a lot in that group” she said fondly.

Speaking of breakups, host Alex Cooper went on to ask Cabello how she feels about getting back together with exes. “I think it's known, I'm a fan,” the singer joked, referencing her on-off relationship with ex Shawn Mendes . The two dated for two years following their hit collaboration on "Señorita" but broke up in 2021. Then, this past summer, they were seen seemingly back together. She went on to explain that she “supports" rekindled romances and thinks it could be “helpful” for both exes. Ultimately, Cabello and Mendes ended their relationship once more, and she personally feels a great level of closure.

"It wasn't even a decision, I think you are just kind of like, 'Yeah this doesn't really — it's not a fit, it doesn’t feel right,'" she recalled of the summer fling’s end. "I think luckily, I was in a place in my life where it took me less time to realize that — and it took us both less time to be like, ‘This doesn't feel right and we don't really need to try so hard to make it work. It's all good. This is not feeling good,' like ‘Let's be friends, I love you. It's all good, let's move on.'”

And just as the two promised in their 2021 statement to fans, the singers remain friendly and have no hard feelings. “I will always care about him and love him, he's such a good person.” Camilia told the podcast. “I'm lucky 'cause some people have exes who are awful — and he is not. He's a really kind, good person."

Despite the fallout, the singer clearly thinks that each situation was "worth it." You can hear more Camilia by tuning into Audacy’s Camila Cabello Radio , available anytime on the free Audacy app.
