A triumphant return following 2018’s Man of The Woods , Justin is back in his lane, evolved and developed, bringing grown and sexy back, and the world is finally right again. A JT album we can really get behind, filled with 18 non-skippable tracks (no, really), Everything I Thought It Was had us casually bopping, rhythmically grooving, or full out dancing for the entire 1 hour, 17 minute run time.
Starting with Track 1, a slower paced bop, “Memphis” serves up high-hats, hypnotic distortions, and insightful lyrics that illuminate JT’s feelings and reflections about his journey of achieving fame and success. It also brought back rapping Justin, and who doesn’t love rapping Justin?
Moving right along, “F**kin’ Up The Disco,” makes us want to do exactly that. A dance track with a catchy chorus, it’s giving a mix of Future Sex/Love Sounds and The 20/20 Experience , but evolved. Basically we have zero complaints, and doubt anyone else will either.
Falsetto from the jump, the funk-pop “No Angels” is another dance floor bop, that utilizes a synthesized voice for an extra oomph and is fit with a Timbaland beat box dance break because well… it wouldn’t be right otherwise.
Next, the addictively catchy “Play,” gives throwback vibes with its flicks of bass and easy-breezy swag. A cheeky track, that has us feeling that is was both a way we haven’t heard Justin in a long time, but at the same time also a fresh new sound, we dare you to try and not bop along to this one… you won’t win.
Slowing things down for a bit, “Technicolor,” is the epitome of the JT R&B we all love, expect, and honestly terribly missed. Starting off as a capital S-E-X-Y bump and grind slow song, the track “fiky-fiky” phases with a surprise tempo change halfway through that gives the song a completely new vibe.
After a serving of sad boy vibes on the album’s percussive second single , “Drown,” and unexpected island vibes on “Liar,” with a silky smooth feature from Fireboy DML , “Infinity Sex” delivers a combination of every Justin era all rolled in one, plus an added sprinkle of some French.
Following up with a slow jam, “Love & War” is about the ups and downs of love. Maybe it’s just the harmonies, but anyone else getting *NSYNC vibes?
Stanky face inducing from the start, on “Sanctified” Justin is a little bit Country, a bit more Rock & Roll, and a divine amount of gospel. Combined with its Tobe Nwige feature, choppy beat, and commentary on his recent public reckoning for past faults, the track is strong possible contestant for Top 3. Why not definite you ask? Well 1 - commitment issues, but more importantly 2 - we don’t want get ahead of ourselves with 7 more tracks to go.
Sandwiched between two more groovy disco offerings, “My Favorite Drug,” easily another possible Top 3, actually let’s make it 5, contender, and “Imagination,” a funky, groovy, good time track, that’s giving both roll bounce and cruising with the top down vibes. “Flame,” is a catchy emotional bop about love lost that gives familiar "What Goes Around… Comes Around" feels.
While “What Lovers Do,” is obviously not the first Timbaland produced track on the album, it’s most certainly the most evident one. From the opening beat, the track is an undeniable perfect Timba-lake combo, with its synthy serenades, beat boxing, drum breaks, and Timbo ad-libs.
On his lead single “Selfish,” Justin serves up some old Justified- Justin vibes with a brand new spin. Followed up by, “Alone,” the slowest and saddest song on the album, filled with maudlin violin and gentle piano melodies.
OKAY STAHHP, IT’S TOO MUCH! Hearing Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez , Lance Bass , Joey Fatone , and Chris Kirkpatrick' s voices harmonizing again on “Paradise” is this millennial girls dream come true. While *NSYNC’s discography is far too vast and iconic to compare, this contemporary Y2K-era boyband ballad has done what it needed to do.
To close out the incredible album, “Conditions,” filled with metaphors and symbolism and swanky sound, at its root is about a man’s self-awareness, introspective quandaries and hope that despite mistakes being made, he will still be loved. The final track is a complete full circle moment from “Memphis,” and a perfect conclusion to the album.
