In a career that spanned five decades, Greg Cameron was well-known and well-liked among Calvert County’s law enforcement community. Cameron, who retired last September, died suddenly March 16 while on a fishing trip in Virginia. He was 62.

The Johnstown, Pa. native who resided in Huntingtown, arrived in Calvert County in 1984 after graduating first in his class at the Maryland State Police Academy.

According to his obituary, prior to joining the Maryland State Police, Cameron, who graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a degree in criminal justice, serviced briefly with the Ocean City police department.

He retired from the state police with the rank of lieutenant. Cameron then joined the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office and became a member of the Calvert Investigative Team, an alliance among the sheriff’s office, local state police barrack and the state’s attorney’s office. While with the sheriff’s office, Cameron also worked as a liaison officer with Neighborhood Watch.

“He was a force to be reckoned with,” Dave McDowell, former assistant sheriff and current public safety director for Calvert County Government said prior to the county commissioners’ meeting Tuesday. “He was 24/7. He was a good man and we’re going to miss him.”

“He was a very hard worker,” Commissioner Todd Ireland (R), a retired sheriff’s office lieutenant said Tuesday. He was a great detective.”

Calvert County Sheriff’ Ricky Cox (R) announced that services for Cameron will be held late Friday morning at the county fairgrounds in Barstow. Burial will be private.

Cameron is survived by two daughters.
