A time capsule of unreleased Marvin Gaye songs has been discovered 4 decades after his death

It’s been 40 years since the world lost R&B icon, Marvin Gaye , and while his songs continue to stand the test of time, there could be more music on the way.

According to reports from the British Broadcasting Company , Gaye willed Belgian musician, Charles Dumolin a “collection of stage costumes, notebooks, and audio tapes,” and those items are now shifting ownership again to Dumolin’s family following his death in 2019.

Alex Trappeniers , a lawyer for the family revealed the audio tapes consist of 66 unreleased Marvin Gaye songs that could be released with the cooperation of Gaye’s estate. “We can open a time capsule here and share the music of Marvin with the world,” Trappeniers shared with the BBC. “Each time a new instrumental started when Marvin started singing, I gave it a number. At the end, when I had listened to all 30 tapes, I had 66 demos of new songs.”

Gaye’s estate has not responded to requests for comment surrounding the findings, however Trappeniers remains hopeful a compromise will be reached saying both sides could benefit.

“I think we both benefit, the family of Marvin and the collection in the hands of [Dumolin’s family],” he expressed. “If we put our hands together and find the right people in the world, the Mark Ronsons or the Bruno Mars … I’m not here to make suggestions but to say OK, let’s listen to this and let’s make the next album.”
