    PREP SOFTBALL: South Beloit wins slugfest against Ashton-Franklin Center

    ASHTON, Ill. — The South Beloit softball team came out on top of an intense offensive battle with Ashton-Franklin Center in a 15-14 win that featured 21 combined hits on Monday.

    While the SoBos (2-3) committed eight errors to the Raiders two, they made up for it by drawing a whopping 18 walks while winning pitcher Whitney Schnack allowed none.

    AFC led 9-8 going into the sixth when the SoBos plated seven runs highlighted by a three-run triple from Zorah Martin. The Raiders (2-7) scored two in the bottom half and three in the seventh but it wasn’t enough.

    Martin went 3-for-5 with four RBI while Macey Lineman was 2-for-5 with three RBI. Schnack allowed 12 runs (six earned) on 12 hits with 13 strikeouts in seven innings.

    • NORTH BOONE 21, WINNEBAGO 1: A six-run first and 13-run third helped the visiting Vikings rout the Indians in three innings during North Boone’s Big Northern Conference opener on Monday.

    Danielle Goodman, who smacked two home runs and a double, paced the Vikings’ (7-2) 13-hit attack by going 3-for-3 with four runs and five RBI. Cami Carter also doubled and went 2-for-4 with four RBI while Olivia Johnson went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.

    Carter pitched all three innings and allowed one earned run on two hits with five strikeouts. Winnebago (2-2, 0-1) committed eight errors.

    • HONONEGAH 11, BELVIDERE 0: Three Hononegah pitchers combined on a 1-hit shutout stopped at five innings by the mercy rule.

    Zoey Calhoun started and pitched the first three innings, allowing the lone hit with two walks and three strikeouts. Mackenzie Haas pitched 1 2-3 innings, allowing no baserunners and striking out three. Emma Tapia struck out the lone batter she faced.

    Calhoun also was 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead a 12-hit attack. Kaelyn Kelly, Peyton Klikno, Natalie Kinney and Mali McMaster also had two hits apiece with Kelly and Klinko knocking in three runs each. Kelly had a double and Klikno a triple as the Indians improved to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in NIC-10 action.

    BRODHEAD 13, MONROE 4: Allie Dahl had three hits and knocked in four runs to power the host Cardinals (3-0), who erased a 2-0 Monroe lead with a four-run first and stayed in front the rest of the way. Dahl collected a two-run single in the first inning and blasted a two-run home run in the second as Brodhead amassed 20 hits.

    Sophia Leitzen also had a big day for Brodhead, going 5-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Keegan Steinke was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI and both Dahl and Ava Risum were 3-for-4. Dahl scored twice and knocked in four and Risum scored once and drove in two.

    Risum went the distance in the pitcher’s circle, allowing four hits and four runs, but just one earned. She didn’t walk anyone and struck out nine.

    • JEFFERSON 4, CLINTON 0: Aeryn Messmann worked around six hits and a pair of walks to shut out the visiting Cougars in Rock Valley Conference crossover play.

    Allie Bell and Ashley Theisen paced Clinton, which finished with six hits, with two apiece but couldn’t come around to score. Theisen went six innings and allowed four runs, three earned, on eight hits with eight strikeouts.

    Ashlyn Enke had an RBI single and Messmann a one-run triple to give the Eagles all they would need with a 2-0 lead in the first.
